About

Scatman John, born John Larkin on March 13, 1942, in El Monte, California, became an iconic figure in the 1990s by blending traditional jazz scat singing with infectious Euro-dance rhythms. A lifelong stutterer, Larkin preferred to express himself through playing the piano, which led him to a successful career as a professional jazz pianist in the 1970s. In 1990, Larkin moved to Berlin, where his performances of jazz standards received standing ovations. His unique style caught the attention of Manfred Zähringer, who suggested he combine scat singing with dance-pop music. Initially reluctant, Larkin eventually penned "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)," drawing inspiration from his personal experience with stuttering. The song, released in late 1994, became a massive hit, selling over six million copies worldwide. Despite being diagnosed with lung cancer in 1998, he remained musically active, releasing his final album, Take Your Time, in June 1999. Scatman John passed away on December 3, 1999, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 57. He is remembered not only for his groundbreaking musical contributions but also for his positive spirit and determination.
