Microtonal-Events in Amsterdam

Microtonal music centers on the utilization of intervals smaller than a standard Western semitone, drawing historical roots from ancient non-Western traditions and 20th-century avant-garde experimentation. Typical instrumentation encompasses custom-built acoustic devices, refretted guitars, and digital synthesizers engineered for precise frequency control beyond twelve-tone equal temperament. While rhythmic characteristics vary, the genre is defined by its unconventional harmonic palettes, often evoking uncanny, ethereal, or intellectually stimulating moods. Semantically, it operates as a specialized category for xenharmonic exploration, providing a framework for compositions that reject the constraints of standard Western tuning to achieve a broader spectrum of pitch and melodic resolution.
