It felt surreal watching all those amazing players changing the world and knowing how that was completely erased from history. It’s thrilling, beautiful, infuriating and heartbreaking all at once. This film is so necessary and important. I’m glad that those incredible women finally have the chance to tell their stories. We need to listen to them and learn for it. May this be the beginning of a crucial reparation. FIFA needs to acknowledge their pioneering accomplishments and finally recognize the damaging contribution the organization had on the setbacks and erasure of women’s football.
The biggest disgrace in football history has been the suppression of and discrimination against women's football. While it's brilliant to see the game flourish in the present day it is disgusting how it was unfairly marginalised for decades. Copa 71 is a beautiful documentary which reveals a corner of football history that has been forgotten and erased: the 1971 Women's World Cup. Even many dedicated football fans aren't aware of its existence. Copa 71 restores hidden footage and brings to life a tournament that was shunned by everyone in power. It is a film dedicated to the pioneers and innovators that stood against the global sporting establishment just by playing football. The cynic in me feels that Copa 71 descends into hollow platitudes by the end and mostly glosses over the deep history of women's football, but I can't deny that as a film it really moved me. It isn't trying to be comprehensive or complete, it just allows these women to speak. These women deserve recognition for their participation in a unique event that represented a new era of football before it was ignored and taken out of our cultural consciousness. Copa 71 is an achievement in emotive documentary filmmaking and has a story to tell that all football fans should see.2024 Ranked
