F.L.Y. is a funny slice-of-life movie about Max and Rafael, former partners, forced to quarantine together during the COVID pandemic. They haven't seen each other in five years, and now Rafael has a new boyfriend. With the added twist of Rafael pursuing a dream of becoming a drag superstar in LA, their reunion gets off to a bumpy start.

The most unbelievable aspect of this pretty cute and comfy film is how the relatively normie white gay is friends with so many hot people of colour with fabulous personalities...the most interesting thing about him is the cute dog that isn't his!! But then it became clear: they all saw something in him that he himself did not see. Very sweet and classic queer "embracing your authentic self" story. Lovely performances from all involved. Too many Tiger King references though.
A lovely, considered message of self-acceptance and healing wrapped in a mostly standard romcom with smart tweaks and one daring reimagining. The two writers-directors-stars hit the formula’s key building blocks — the playful montage where one splashes water and then gets splashed back and they both laugh*; the big “it’s over” fight. But instead of the usual dance break or lip-sync number, this has both, the former heightened in a number of ways, the latter with a fourth-wall break like a traditional musical. On top of those, trans singer Shea Diamond breaks out into a deeply felt a capella serenade to lift a friend’s spirits. The bold change shouldn’t be spoiled; suffice it to say that there are many ways to define “happy” at the ending. It’s acknowledged early on that one main character, Rafael, has worked hard to overcome internalized shame and accept himself as nonbinary, and the filmmakers wisely understand that truth’s seismic shift. It means that happiness comes from within, so — even as the film honors the importance of community, elders, and families of choice and origin — old, familiar paradigms are strictly optional. * 20+ years of marriage, four significant BFs prior, zero splashing.
Uptight gym rat is torn between his butch boyfriend and his drag queen ex during the 2020 pandemic. The first hour plays like a romcom. The second half is a weepy melodrama. The green actors can’t quite pull off the tonal shift. But the key emotional moments land.
