A science fiction set in a retro environment is, for me, an inherently winning combination. The old screens, patinated instruments, vintage switchboards, complemented by retro clothing and black-and-white cinematography, give the film captivating aesthetics. Add to this that the story, centered around a potentially groundbreaking scientific discovery, also carries a solid dose of social critique (mainly about bureaucracy and clientelism, which remain just as relevantly corrosive to Eastern European societies today), and you get a truly noteworthy, independent Romanian production. The screenplay, written in the style of a psychological drama, could easily function as a stage play. It provides a deep analysis of human aspiration which, like a seed fallen on poor soil, stubbornly tries to sprout again and again through the cracks of the concrete desert of everyday mundane life. The story depicts a single night in the lives of three scientists as they attempt to prove a discovery that could alter modern physics, racing against time while confronting the systemic oppression that stifles understanding. The film has both strengths and weaknesses. A simple yet meaningful love story is woven into the scientific thriller as a side thread. The characters are interesting, but unevenly developed. The scenes linger too long in the world of science and numbers —time that could have instead been used to unfold the characters and develop their backstories. The dialogue and scientific reasoning also dwell too much in a territory that — while momentarily sparking the viewer's curiosity about the possibilities of quantum physics — cannot hold an average viewer’s attention for long. For me, it was also a personal disappointment that Maia Morgenstern, listed among the cast, never actually appears on screen, lending only her voice to a brief phone-call sequence. All in all, this is a noteworthy independent film—one of the most distinctive works of the year’s Romanian cinema output, and a strong sign of a promising future for writer-director Bădărău.
