"Hands! Men's hands! How I hate them!...Men! The beasts! God would show wisdom if he took the hands from all of them!" -Joan Crawford channeling every woman alive in 2016
Regie Tod Browning
Ein bedrückendes, von der Kritik gefeiertes Drama.
On the lam, criminal Alonzo hides in the circus as The Armless Wonder—a performer who uses his feet to hurl knives. Alonzo keeps the arms he really has concealed to hide his identity. Meanwhile, ringmaster's daughter Nanon has a phobia of being touched by men, but is romantically pursued by not only Alonzo but the strongman Malabar. Alonzo's desperation to remain with Nanon will only end in tragedy.

"Hands! Men's hands! How I hate them!...Men! The beasts! God would show wisdom if he took the hands from all of them!" -Joan Crawford channeling every woman alive in 2016
Watched on a personal recommendation.
Delirium of concealment and deformity, orchestrated in a visual syntax of anguish and erotic restraint, coexisting with it the fragmentation of the body, which becomes both literal and psychological architecture. The absence of arms is not here just to function as a physical limitation but for something related to symbolic castration, binding desire to the grotesque and the unspeakable. Desire is inextricably linked to mutilation; identity is refracted through performance, illusion, and sacrifice. The mise-en-scène trembles with the tension between what is seen and what is hidden from our eyes, fetishized limbs, repressed violence, stares of repulsion. Each frame operates like a confession disguised as spectacle, a carnivalesque inversion of the profane, where repression does not impede expression but intensifies it to the unbearable. The cinematic grammar refuses absolute catharsis and instead inhabits the perverse voluptuousness of the unreachable, as love deteriorates into pathology and self-erasure becomes the final gesture of desire.I also want to give my attention to the performances themselves, especially Chaney’s, not just acting, but transmuting, shaping torment into ritual. His incarnation of Alonzo is one of the most disciplined expressions of acting in the silent era: muscular in restraint, explosive in interiority. Every contraction, every glance, is choreographed in emotional chiaroscuro. His suffering is neither sympathetic nor grotesque; it's almost theological and mythical. And in contrast, Crawford assumes the role of Nanon with a nascent intuition, a performance suspended between vulnerability and awakening. She would later say that watching Chaney taught her not only how to act but also how to see acting, the difference between presence and projection. “Lon Chaney was my introduction to acting,” she wrote about the actor. It was in his unwavering concentration, in his total absorption, that she saw a vocation. The film captures this dynamic not only on screen but in its very essence, it documents the transmission of an artistic gravity from master to apprentice. A fantastic film from a rich and pioneering era!
