Free Dust is a pseudonym used by Matthew Sage (aka M. Sage) when working within a specific creative constraint. All music made under this moniker is composed using electric guitar and effect pedals recorded directly to cassette 4-track. Where his music as M. Sage utilizes a hybridized and collage-centric approach focused on digital studio production experimentation and improvisation, Free Dust is a more diaristic and minimal all-analog style. Archive, a double CD released on the now defunct Patient Sounds label in 2019, collects the first recordings of this project, 160 minutes of wordless guitar sketches recorded from 2015-2016. In January of 2021 the first proper LP for this project, Woo'd Early, was released on Past Inside the Present records.
