黃美琦 vicki huang is a taiwanese-american singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, dj-producer, 3D artist, audiovisual storyteller, and XR creator based in kaohsiung who draws inspiration from the deep reservoir of folk songs and roots music. combining hybrid flavors of modern electronic elements with traditional folk idioms, from american folk blues to vintage taiwanese ballads, she seeks to use classic blues motifs and ancient archetypes to share taiwanese-american story songs. her electronic music journey began in her childhood bedroom in new jersey with the discovery of idm glitch music and beginning to collect and tinker with field recordings. while studying audio engineering in michigan, her electronic dance music fervor and education deepened in the afterhours dancefloors of detroit. she worked as a VJ in projection mapping + VR in los angeles where her sonic palette expanded to the dreamy melodic techno and deep house of sunset dayparties. vicki endeavors to compile her ethnomusicological investigations and present them in new a/v multimedia works. vicki’s latest vinyl EP features a collection of reimaginings of tainan folksongs and will be self-released on 鹽埕區長 mayor of salt district along with an interactive AR zine. you can find her digging for rare vintage taiwanese hokkien records or exchanging grooves at the local vinyl listening lounges, defining and pushing sounds together with the vibrant creative community of southern taiwan.
