Parting Shots
Νοσταλγικός, underground καλλιτέχνης post-punk
Parting Shots 1979-1983 An experimental band that burned brightly but briefly in the immediate post-punk aftermath. Formed in the early summer of 1979 by John (Joe) Hammond, original guitarist for seminal North East punk outfit The Wall (feat. Ian Lowery). Joe was joined by drummer John O’Neill (The Debutants) and bass player Dave Grey with the aim of developing an uncompromising sound beyond basic DIY punk origins. Joe wrote most of the earliest songs such as ‘Music Machine’ and ‘Answers’ many of which drew from his previous experiences with The Wall but it quickly became a much more collaborative effort. Norm writing more contemplative lyrics while Dave and John built a driving rhythmic base for Joe’s jangly guitar and the dynamic vocals. Their demo EP was recorded at Lynx Studios, Shieldfield, Newcastle on Valentine’s Day, 14th February 1980. Four tracks: ‘Winner’, ‘Only One’, ‘It’s Yours’ and ‘Be Smart, Be Safe’. The four-piece band was eventually playing the college circuit from Newcastle to Wimbledon before moving full-time to London in the autumn of 1980 when original bassist Dave Grey stayed up north to complete his design qualifications and was replaced by Dave Dawson.
