Hoewel Bach in de Matthäus-Passion religieuze teksten gebruikt, focust Mortensen zich op de universele, diepere betekenis van de woorden. Bach schrijft volgens hem ambachtelijk en met een diep begrip van het menselijke en al onze emoties. Hij creëerde muziek die goddelijk is, maar herkenbaar blijft door de focus op het menselijke aspect. Van de grootse opening tot de intieme aria's en het slotkoor, je hoort Bach hier op zijn best.
