Prenant très à cœur la révélation de jeunes interprètes, Marguerite Long fait don de toute sa fortune pour permettre la mise en œuvre du premier concours et assurer sa pérennité. De nombreux mécènes poursuivront son action jusqu’à aujourd’hui.
