Kadialy Kouyate
Underground, νοσταλγική βραδιά world
Kadialy Kouyate is a kora player and singer from Senegal who now performs all around the UK and Europe. Born into a family of griot oral traditional storytellers from the Mandinka culture, he began playing the kora at an early age. He has earned acclaim as a griot artist, leading him to perform and teach at Dakar University and the West African Research Centre. The Mandinka kora is a unique harp-like instrument with 21 strings, traditionally played in a style similar to Flamenco guitar. Kouyate's hypnotic performances are typically accompanied by solo voice. Based in the UK since 2003, he has been featured on the BBC World Service, BBC3 World Roots, and has performed live at the WOMAD festival.
