Hijo Pròdigo is the sound identity of the Philadelphia born/Chicago bred DJ, Justin Ignatius Mitchell. Born in the red lit basements of Chicago’s underground dance scene, Hijo Pródigo summons afro-diasporic sounds across timelines, spanning continents and eclipsing genre, expanding on regional electronic music legacies from Baltimore, Chicago, and Detroit. Mitchell’s sound developed from a reverence for hip hop’s futurism and the frenetic maximalism of contemporary club music, shaped by a formative tenure working at the Chicago record store Gramaphone Records. The resulting mosaic of influences is an energetic blend of past, present, and future rooted in house and techno.
