Israël en Égypte tient dans l’oeuvre de Haendel une place un peu particulière et est certainement l’un de ses oratorios le plus audacieux pour les chœurs. Entièrement écrit sur des textes sacrés, comme ce sera aussi le cas de son Messiah deux ans plus tard, il était pourtant destiné à être représenté dans des théâtres. L’ouvrage illustre tour à tour les dix plaies d’Égypte et le retour d’Israël vers la terre promise. Contrairement à une Passion de Bach ou à un opéra de Mozart, Haendel n’emploie ici que très rarement le récitatif, et donne aux choeurs l’essentiel du discours narratif.
