Medina Swing
Underground βραδιά jazz
Medina Swing is more than a fusion, it is a dynamic sonic collaboration in both traditions and modernity. Driven by the vision of Casablanca producer Maurice Elbaz (Hafla Casablanca) this project both celebrates Moroccan identity and heritage but brings a new Maghrebi-futurism, placing it squarely in the 21st Century. From the exquisiteness of Andalusian Noubas and emotional depth of Melhoun poetry through to the popular classics of Hocine Slaoui and the golden age from 1950–2000, the group infuses secular melodies with the liberating spirit of swing. Jazz rhythms provide sonic residency for complexity of the Tar and Darbouka to express themselves, while Jazz's inherent improvisational ethos breathes new life into classical instruments, developing new conversational vocabulary to the music.
