Het spannendste onderdeel van de Cello Biënnale. Na een voorselectie krijgen vijftien jonge cellotalenten de kans zich in drie rondes te presenteren aan een internationale jury. In de gratis toegankelijke Eerste Ronde spelen alle vijftien deelnemers dezelfde stukken. Na tien concoursen staat nu voor het eerst geen werk van Luigi Boccherini op het programma, maar van de Italiaanse componist-cellist Giovanni Battista Cirri. Ook David Popper was een cellist die naast de verplichte etudes voor elke cellostudent een flinke hoeveelheid zeer charmante voordrachtstukken schreef.
