Charlie Bates Big Band
Underground βραδιά jazz
Composer and pianist Charlie Bates brings his big band to Ronnie Scott’s for a special performance featuring guest vocalists and a programme of original music. Known for his work as a composer and arranger with ensembles including NDR Big Band, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, Bates has developed a distinctive voice as a writer for large ensembles, drawing together influences from jazz, orchestral music and songwriting. This concert brings together a hand-picked band of leading musicians from across the London jazz scene to perform music from Bates’ growing catalogue of work. Balancing detailed composition with improvised solos and songs, the programme moves between expansive ensemble writing, lyrical melodies and moments of rhythmic energy, shaped by the individual voices of the musicians performing it. Alongside collaborations with major international ensembles, Bates’ music has been performed across Europe and recognised with several awards, including an Ivor Novello Award. Joined by special guest vocalists (to be announced), Bates and his big band present an evening that showcases the breadth of his writing and the creativity of some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians.
