“Romance is about the possibility of the thing. You see, it's about the time between when you first meet the woman, and when you first make love to her; When you first ask a woman to marry you, and when she says I do. When people who been together a long time say that the romance is gone, what they're really saying is they've exhausted the possibility.”Love Jones is often cited as one of the most egregious examples of 90s Hollywood failing black filmmakers. It’s also brought up by black audiences and actors as one of the best love stories of the 90s and it sure as shit is. That Theodore Witcher never made another movie despite all the meetings he was tossed is a low down dirty shame. Love Jones is a simple love story, man (Larenz Tate) meets woman (Nia Long), she seems him for the womanizer he is and doesn’t give him a chance; man tries to reform but finds it hard to keep his perception as a lady’s man alive with his friends if he settles down and man has to decide what’s more important, impressing your friends or being true to yourself and true to a partner and giving in to love. When Tate goes from the pained look of saying "she's the one" aloud and then sees the expectations of what that label means on his friend's face so he falls back on "nah, I'm all about the sex" to the eventual staple 90s kiss in the rain, mouthing the words "I love you" because they still can't be said aloud, but at least he’s aware of the feeling—that’s a cinematic journey everyone should’ve had on their radar. Witcher’s script is smart, Tate and Long have a dream connection, and it’s wondrous to behold a black romance film that gets to exist without an additional societal message. Still holding out hope for a Witcher comeback; it’s on everyone’s lips who’s seen it.
These people felt so real and the chemistry between the whole cast is off the walls. The poetry in this is beautiful.
