"What the modern movie lacks is beauty,” said D.W. Griffith, melancholy at the end of the a long career, “the beauty of the moving wind in the fur coat of a gorgeous woman right before she stabs her lesbian lover to death with a pen knife as two zonked out hippies watch from a balcony above.” [quote somewhat altered]Fulci's anti-hippie, gay panic London town murder mystery is a psychedelic funhouse labyrinth of snap zooms, jump cuts, swish pans, split screens, split dogs, belfry bats and fashionable psychological mumbo jumbo. Fulci, like so many of his contemporaries, is alone a force to be reckoned with (at least when he's firing on all cylinders), but as he is here surrounded by cinematographers, production and costume designers and other collaborators of equal power, he's unstoppable. Ennio Morricone's woozy, erotic score is the cherry on top, coming in and out of diegesis and mirroring the visual motifs of spirals and splits with Eda Dell'orso's main refrain which seems to be circling, descending and ascending all at the same time. Top shelf giallo. The new Mondo Macabro bluray looks and sound terrific.
Lucio Fulci Takes Acid, and Other Scary Stories to Tell at a Dark Sleazy Sex PartyHedonistic elites run amuck, trippy sex dreams that fluctuate between drug-fueled fantasies, repressed memories, and imminent reality, and scaly lizard people that taunt you in your murderous psychedelic nightmares. This is the pinnacle of Fulci’s giallo catalogue, even if it is lighter on the gore and depravity than are his wackier outings (not lighter on sexual depravity, mind you, there’s definitely no shortage of that). Instead, what sets it apart most (for me at least) is without a doubt the Alexandra Palace chase scene—that’s some top tier giallo shit right there.P.S. Shoutout to that bizarre giant evil goose that shows up for one brief moment and then disappears forever.Best of: Classic Italian Horror
