Na Hong-jin’s HOPE is for people who miss Michael Bay’s Transformers movies (me). Loved it from start to finish. Some of the most exhilarating action filmmaking I’ve seen in recent memory. Broke my brain, i don’t think I’ve ever had such a visceral reaction to a movie. Fucking absurd. What what what.
On second watch, I’m choosing to implement Rule of Cool ™️ in the sense that so much of action is staged and sequenced so gorgeously that I don’t particularly care that some of the VFX are rough around the edges. A big-budget/R-rated/original action epic in this ecosystem? Lucky us.
