excellent piece of hamaguchi melodrama
Between the lovestruck art student in this film and the lovelorn ex-girlfriend in the first chapter of Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, I feel like Hamaguchi has invented the Demonic Pixie Dream Girl. Funny and delightful but packs a decent punch when it comes to the very real and very difficult decision faced by Eiko (Aoba Kawai, who also stars in Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy). It's the age-old choice between passion and stability, brought to a head at the hour of the actual wedding with a bunch of family members and a hyper-competent wedding planner breathing down the unhappy couple's necks. The Indie Sleaze-era fashions and haircuts in this film are truly repulsive. Eiko's wedding gown in particular – an empire-waisted semi-corseted nightmare with clear plastic "invisible" straps – is so ill-fitting, unflattering and cheap-looking that I couldn't stop thinking about it whenever it was on screen. I hope they set fire to it after they finished shooting!
it seems that i liked this more than most users here. yeah its more soapy than hamaguchi’s usual works, but i really liked the cinematography. i also think erina is the early prototype of meiko (furukawa kotone in wheel of fortune and fantasy) and eiko’s demeanour somehow reminds me of asako30 jan, 1940, broadway cinemathequeseen w like nothing happenedhamaguchi ranked
