to me, the idea of Qodrat and Naru being love interests somehow weakens the idea of him being a “good man”; it highlights the conception that in order to be respected by men you need to serve them a romantic or physical purpose, which ends up mudding part of the thesis of the film. i would’ve found a friendship much more impactful, sparing the idea of this man cheating on his wife and lying to his family lolhowever, i found the other themes, such as the persecution of journalists by the taliban, and the perspectives of afghan women on love and goodness truly striking.

not the big bang you'd expect for the grand opening ceremony of an A-Festival, but a small television film fully produced by all available federal state film fonds they could get a hold of. one can only guess what the committee was ridden by - there was surely some questionable babycham in the Berlinale offices this year - No Good Men is a lot, but surely no opening film for this A-list behemoth in the old lady B.that being said Sadat's Kabul set dramedy has its merits of authentic moments for what it is - a small scale independent production - as it has the common flaws these type of productions usually have: tonal shakiness, heavy-handed writing, TV aesthetics. in other words: nothing that should ever get a serious consideration for the opening act. the biggest miss might be to actually be confrontational full on though: if you do your film decidedly on a patriarchy gone mad, go fully into it, and risk a heavier discourse around it. No Good Men is hiding a real dispute by the comedic tone (including dildo jokes) in the first half while letting the reality - meaning tragedy - commence the second part. at this point it's survival mode with the Taliban lurking around the corner. the actual topic - as advertised in the title - is relegated, and only gets a few moments of depth in the lighter parts of the film. Berlinale pushing this film is totally fine, but as opening act it's a disastrous choice, both in the public image as well as how it intermixes the essence of entertainment and the desire for political attitude, both being handled ineptly. Postscriptum hilarious: the lady in front of me being on her phone the entire runtime - looking up only every few minutes - but then starting the applause with massive enthusiasm. you know where the mediocre reception started - right with this hipocracy. you gotta love arthouse festival audiences.

filmde bi erkeğin aşık olmadan da iyi kalpli olabileceğini görmek isterdim. aynı zamanda kendi kızının doğum gününü unutan, son sahnelerde kendi ailesine değil başka bir kadına ve çocuğuna yardım eden biri gerçekten iyi bir erkek midir? yoksa "no good men" konusunu kanıtlamış mı oluruz? ek olarak, kadınların kendi arasında yaptığı herhangi bir sohbetin bir şekilde politikaya bağlanmasının evrensel olduğunu düşünüyorum:) sonuç olarak filmin hafif belgesel tadı, kadınlarla birebir empati kurmak, sadece filmi izlemek ve üzerine düşünmek bile bana "birlikte" hissi verdi. sevdim!!
