Time capsule of the NYC art-world from the 40s, 50s, 60s. Made in the early 70s, this documentary has lots of unvarnished and raw interviews with a few famous painters, critics, and collectors. The scope is pretty small. Very slow, but at times very fascinating.
i could watch infinite hours of this kind of media on a loop. there’s nothing better than strange, obsessive, deeply self-serious people talking about art and ideas. this glazes pollock a tad more than i’d prefer, but whatever — hero worship is part of the ecosystem. i’ve known to participate myself. seriously, i recommend this to anyone who wants to become a con artist and infiltrate the art world or high society for some kind of special ops mission. this isn’t ideal for total beginners, but it’s basically a semester’s worth of art history’s biggest ideas delivered in a raw, intimate, almost feral format. and honestly? most people have no idea what’s going on for a large part of the art history curriculum anyway, so it’s all par for the course. deep down we’re all just tarzan swinging from vine to vine, grasping at theory and uttering confident nonsense. but there are kernels of truth buried in the chaos. this could absolutely help you become a better bullshitter — the refined, cocktail-party kind.peggy guggenheim is my absolute idol and spirit guide. it’s so lame we don’t have baller heiress patrons building museums and cultivating talent anymore. how come billionaires aren’t out here funding parks and libraries? instead we get athleisure lines and deodorant startups. 🫤 deeply uninspired.anyway, really enjoyed this — but let’s be honest, the documentary might also be titled: “old men talking… except the one time they let helen frankenthaler spit better bars than all of them combined” or something of that nature.
This documentary does a fantastic job in showing the purpose behind a lot of modern/postmodern art movements. I finally understand the work of many artists who once eluded me.Doesn't mean I like the paintings, though.Still, this is a fascinating film. Highly recommended!
