Breathless action thriller that really does not let up at all in its last 45 minutes - and the 35 before that are hardly pedestrian!It's also a Who's Who of upcoming French acting talent. Daniel Auteil lookalike Gilles Lellouche, the stunning Elena Anaya and the brooding Roschdy Zen are all fast rising stars in French cinema and the two male leads especially show why they are so highly thought of. In fairness to Anaya, she probably got told to just look heavily pregnant and hold her back a lot, she's not given much to do.Its main and only problem is that you're never entirely sure who several of the characters are working for in the first half an hour, but the action becomes so breathtaking after a while that you don't much care. Really entertaining stuff - and almost certain for the Hollywood remake treadmill.
Point Blank hits you like a good, solid punch to the face. A good, solid French punch to the face!Clocking in at just over 80 minutes long, this lean, mean action-thriller is both relentlessly paced and furiously exciting. The plot is a slice of old-school pulp fiction. It's loaded with violent set pieces, propulsive suspense and a scattering of some juicy twists and turns that make sure the momentum never falters. This one is all about the action, right from the get-go. If you're looking for deft character work or a starkly realistic story, you should look somewhere else. Don't get me wrong - the movie is played completely straight, and it's directed with a gritty edge that ensures it never feels silly or cheesy. But the story can be implausible at times, stretching reality a good bit, and there are plenty of classic tropes on full display. But honestly, that's all I want from my action movies sometimes. Just a non-stop onslaught of cinematic adrenaline, the rest be damned. And holy shit, does Point Bank deliver on that.P.S - I first found out about this movie after Edgar Wright recommended it in an video interview he did some years back. That dude knows his stuff. He should become a director or something.
