Honestly, of all the “classic” movies, I think this might be the most unexpectedly awesome sequel that none of us knew we needed and half of folks forget/refuse to remember exists because “sacred cow” syndrome.Anyways, Psycho II rules—Easily one of my favorite sequels and favorite 80’s slashers. Also, I’ve experimented with watching this in Black and White and it that’s a big mood—it looks wonderful... especially right after watching Psycho! Definitely a fun experiment but either way you can’t go wrong with this movie—it’s great!

"I'm becoming confused again, aren't I?"I'd always heard that this was a surprisingly good sequel but not how downright devastating it is; Holland writes it with deep empathy for Norman's battle with both his own psyche and members of the community that would maybe prefer he doesn't get better, which Franklin and Cundey then visually realize with an effective combination of Hitchcock's classical form and these bursts of more updated 80s slasher elements. What especially works about this is the way it deliberately weaponizes the iconography of the original film and audience bloodlust as Perkins (who is unreal good in this; as broken, confused and sweaty a performance as I've ever seen) actively tries to resist every single image that is screaming at him to repeat the horror people expect and that a sequel all but demands of him. The film's genius is that when it finally does indulge in the gruesome cyclical horror (and boy does it ever!), it's layered with incredibly depressing, guilt-ridden implications about how we treat those dealing with trauma and mental illness.Full discussion on episode 141 of my podcast SLEAZOIDS.
