First CIFF review but this movie would’ve been a lot better if it just stuck to the mother daughter storyline. I don’t see the purpose in stringing trump or politics along, it wasn’t a political movie imo. It felt like they made the movie about the mom and daughter and somehow made it relate to politics due to our present day political climate. Yall should watch this if you have mommy issues though
I felt as though I was bait and switched by the movie’s synopsis but the stellar writing for 90% of the runtime really makes up for it. I wouldn’t describe this movie as a political commentary, mostly due to its surface-level conceptualization of American party politics. Instead, like the director said in the q&a before the film, this is a movie about a woman finding her soul. When you watch it through that lens, it’s a really good movie. It tells a really empathetic story about familial trauma, abandonment, aging, and the fact that you really don’t know other people. Great aesthetics too, they really nailed that old technicolor/American realism mid-century feel.
