i got immediately annoyed within the first ten seconds when someone whined "if you're ok with watching a movie on your phone just stop watching this now" like anyone watching a documentary about repertory cinema is gonna watch it on their phone lol fuck off loser. like god shut up!! horrible choice to open on that imo. i really loathe the self-importance of this breed of cinephile i'm pretty sure i've said it before but movies do not matter, they are very important to me obviously i love movies! the preservation of literal film & other forms of quickly decaying forms of media matters! but movies are not the most important thing in the world imo. my life does not revolve around movies. that's a flagrant lie my life extremely does but obviously it's ok for me not for anyone else. no i just mean that there's a certain way of framing an interest in film as like this massive life-defining cultural force and not like a hobby or... literally just an interest? that easily slides into contempt for anyone that doesn't view film the exact same way. it drives me up the fucking wall! like the way these nerds whine about multiplexes makes me feel like they don't actually love movies, they love the exclusivity of their special theater. i know this is technically a documentary about a specific beloved special theater but it just seems like people who built an identity around being an outcast because they.... like movies? ok. also some guy literally makes a joke about sterilizing people for texting during the movies? this is what i mean! bro. literally it's not that deep and if you want to set up and contribute to state-run sterilization centers because someone sends a text during a movie seek help. it's not funny! i just really hope i'm not this overbearing/unbearable about film to the casual observer??? man i now hate my former job the library yet i regret making them spend $2 on this via kanopy. i wish i had attempted to watch on my phone at the very least instead.

”In a sense you could call it a temple. It’s a temple to movies.”A bunch of talking heads talking about the thing I love!My personal New Beverly is The Hollywood Theatre in Portland, and everything said here applies for me there. I am so looking forward to the end of this pandemic and my long overdue homecoming!BONUS POINTS for the piece on Clu Gulager, which absolutely touched me.”I’ve gotten a lot of friends from sitting in the dark.”
