I knew nothing about this going in (the only way to do it) but if you had told me it was Sorcerer meets Cool Hand Luke but with an Ethan Hawke father-daughter twist I wouldn’t have been able to believe you. The audience was viscerally feeling every bone-crunching beat. A true throwback tale with a director-editor and a composer-writer, people putting their heart and soul into flawed characters you nonetheless wanna grow up to be. Loved it. Rockstar shit.

A nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat, palms-sweaty, knees-weak piece of cinema for dudes where men are being men in a brutal world with sky-high stakes.One of the tightest screenplays of the year and a magnificent directorial effort.A period piece with a plot, vibes, characters and something to say. It feels like Hollywood is slowly going back to its roots with something like this or The Brutalist releasing within a few years of each other. A film that channels the energy of William Friedkin's Sorcerer. While it never quite achieves the highs of Friedkin's masterpiece, The Weight is well worth its weight in gold. Editor Padraic McKinley takes the helm in the director's chair with this one in his directorial debut and watching decades worth of films must have informed his cinematic understanding and cinematic language as this definitely comes across as a seasoned creative with years of experience under his belt. A few interesting smash cuts tell me he's quite interested in using editing as a tool for storytelling and not just utilizing it as a barebones means to cut and splice the best coverage together to make sense of a scene. A true storyboarder if I've ever seen one. Ethan Hawke's best role in years in my personal opinion. Sorcerer meets Train Dreams meets Blood Simple?I dig it.Such an easy movie to recommend. I feel like every single one of my friends would enjoy this movieCora Pratz one of the most underrated production designers in the game.
