What a fascinating documentary. Unlike most cryptozoological movies or shows, this one actually provides answers and has a conclusion. It’s full of wacky characters (including Clint Patterson, who looks like Bill Paxton doing a cowboy character), and while it IS about the famous Patterson film, it’s more about the aftermath it wrought. Greed and lies surrounding the film tear a family apart, and it indirectly alters the course of MANY lives, mostly for the worse.
The Letterboxd admins who continue to delete the original Patterson-Gimlin Film entry are fools, especially now that it's confirmed to be a hoax and therefore technically the first significant work of found footage horror. One of the most pure and perfect stretches of celluloid ever exposed; an image as protean and iconic as the Muybridge horse.Intellectually I have always known Patty was a fraud--anyone with sense did--and yet... the confirmation comes with a wave of melancholy. There is one less mystery in a world that more and more becomes despairingly dull and small; one less shadow flickering on the cave wall of our collective imagination. Cryptozoology is a hobby for cranks but it's not hard to see the appeal; wouldn't it be wonderful if there were some monsters out there who have somehow managed to escape our wholesale genocide of the megafauna? In a world of increasing, all-consuming surveillance, the idea that some entirety other race runs free of the panopticon, eluding our cameras and sensors, is a hopelessly romantic one.
