Caught in between loving its ideas, but not its execution. Buried deep beneath the incessant yelling of every line of dialogue exists a laborious attempt at satire, desperately begging its audience to laugh but offering very little to laugh at. Possibly the point, but once you know the movie’s gimmick, its construction feels even more confounding. In its constant strain to make a point so shallow it never realizes how far it actually has to dig, volume is mistaken for depth. I like Iñárritu as an image maker. When the rocket skates this movie wears starts to slow down and Cruise is allowed to show some range, the movie really begins to sing (it is not a musical btw but maybe it should have been). But its dedication to its bit made it a wildly exhaustive. Shout out Riz Ahmed, stealth MVP. Have a gut feeling it’ll play a lot better on rewatch. It’s the much much inferior version of a movie from a couple years back, which I’ll ominously not name (for now), for the sake of spoilers.
