The bittersweet isn't usually what you encounter in Joe Dante's films, but intentionally or not this exposes that escape as a fleeting illusion while still allowing it to remain vital. Maybe the most important truth in human history isn't alien life, it's that beauty fades. We all eventually give in to the resignation and tougher concerns of adulthood and age, and it turns out that while the little green men of our wildest imaginations are indeed an amazing discovery, they're also just ordinary. People with pipe dreams and crummy families. They watch too much TV and like fart jokes, same as us. You may have to get used to disappointment but you don't have to like it.
