It’s filmed like an extended commercial. If you played it on mute, you could use the scenes as b-roll for a medication commercial that side effects could include explosive diarrhea or sudden death. My stars are really only Conor Leslie. She a bright spot in this.
The union of Conor Leslie and Brett Dier off-screen may constitute magic, but, unlike hosts of other romantic dramas that rely on fate and unrealistic plot twists, it’s the relatable honesty of their "In Spite of Ourselves" characters that makes this buried treasure of an independent film special. Any grand romantic gestures of courtship or necessary apologies after mistakes fit the size of these characters, not the size of the usual movie stereotypes for this genre. When the aforementioned hurdles of messy attributes and misaligned personal paths clash, everyone expects that mix to fail. With the bared truth of those factors in play, Josh Loeb’s film shines by watching two scared people use their own measures of goodness to find commitment against their challenges and those of their partner, with equal acceptance. Rooting for that kind of success becomes as enjoyable as relishing in the cinnamon roll with them.FULL REVIEW: everymoviehasalesson.com/blog/2026/9/movie-review-in-spite-of-ourselves
In Spite of Ourselves - directed by Josh Loeb, was a film that worked the rom-com techniques well. The story follows “a warm Portland baker named Hannah and a commitment-phobic Los Angeles comedian named Archie share an instant, undeniable chemistry during a whirlwind two weeks together before real life and personal insecurities pull them back to their separate cities.” I loved the character of Archie. Sometimes I feel like I can relate to him,not really liking dealing with people and being alone. I felt a connection to the character, and I believe Brett Dier plays him real well. Life sometimes sucks, and the film doesn’t shy away from that fact. Hannah, played by Conor Leslie, being a baker dealing with her own battles, is trying to work towards her dream. I relate to that same story. I also loved the messiness of the relationship. The first date and the ending to the date. The reconcile that Hannah and Archie have after Archie breaks down on live television. Archie and Hannah trying to work out what the relationship is. It’s very real world, which is something I appreciated about this love story. It’s not cheesy or butterflies and rainbows, but because they are both experiencing two different struggles, it can make it feel exhausting and isolating. The visual aspect of the film is great. The cinnamon roll at the beginning of the movie made my mouth water. The score was also very nice and relaxing, supporting the visual well. Overall, I thought the film was honest and tender, not shying away from any hardships that couples may face, while ending on a really touching and beautiful note.
Het volgt een bakker uit Portland en een komiek uit Los Angeles die een intense connectie van twee weken beleven voordat afstand en twijfels hun relatie op de proef stellen.
