After much consideration, I have decided I will not be climbing K2.

After much consideration, I have decided I will not be climbing K2.
Anyone who can climb is real bold,And some want their full story told. When scaling K2,They'll try something new,And go up when it's most dark and cold.
At the start, as it plays the panicked audio transmission of an experienced climber worrying that people in his tent near the summit of K2 are ill-prepared and that some are going to die, I worried that this documentary account of rival team’s attempts in 2021 to be the first in the world to reach the summit of K2 during winter (known as the “Last First” of climbing because all other 8000m+ mountains have been done in all seasons) would be exploitative. And at times it is: hard to avoid when it has to end its story on the frozen bodies of dead climbers, shown on camera. But this is still essential viewing, as one more unflinching documentary showing the dangers of mankind pushing their luck with nature to the limits (see also Grizzly Man, Fire of Love, etc.). It SHOULD terrify us, it has a moral duty to do so, and the footage of K2’s frighteningly steep ascents being battered by the elements in winter and hurling rocks and avalanches at miniscule climbers on its face most definitely does. Yet it goes further: it probes the 21st century’s biggest problems in mountaineering, from the commercial exploitation of inexperienced climbers by corporations to the nationalism of competing groups and governments to achieve new “firsts” to the privileging of English-speaking climbers in the media to the glory-hogging of influencers to the disastrous impact of social media in pushing climbers well out of their comfort zones. The most revealing and chilling moment comes near the beginning, when an Icelandic climber describes summiting Mont Blanc in his youth and feeling nothing standing there at the top, but when he descended and posted five pictures on Facebook, “that’s when it came.”Films of 2026 (UK Release): Ranked
