The old prospector is one of the coolest dudes I’ve ever seen
When I worked at Cinemark it was common for kids under 17 to buy tickets to PG or PG-13 movies and after getting past the ticket booth they’d walk into whatever theater they wanted (we didn’t have assigned seats). This happened a lot when It Chapter One came out.One day, while It Chapter One was still playing, two young girls (probably like 13 or 14) came to the the ticket booth and presented me with their tickets: two tickets to see the Fathom Events screening of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Of course I knew they were planning on sneaking in to see It Chapter One, but I was a 16 year old wage slave and couldn’t bear to let anyone else be happy. So I ripped their tickets and then watched as they walked in the direction of It Chapter One. They kept looking over their shoulder to see if I’d stop looking and I didn’t. They stood frozen in front of the theater so I yelled out to them “Theater 9, on your right,” and they awkwardly nodded and went into the theater showing The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Over the next two hours I was stationed at my post, both ripping tickets and watching that theater. Twice one of them would come out and “go to the bathroom,” probably checking to see if I was still watching, which I was. I made sure they finished watching The Treasure of the Sierra Madre because I thought it’d be funny to make them watch some boring black and white western film. 6 years later, after seeing it for the first time, I’ve realized I did those girls a service and showed them one of the best Hollywood classics ever made. I’m not saying I deserve praise, after all my intentions were purely to punish young people with old movies, but after finishing The Treasure of the Sierra Madre for myself, I realized I was the hero after all. You’re welcome.SOMBRERO 8

Goin' through some mighty rough country tomorrow, you'd better have some beans."It is beyond me why it took so long to finally view this piece of cinematic treasure.Although John Huston's directing is absolutely equal to the screenplay, winning Oscars for both, it is the performance level of the actors that makes "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" the classic film that it is. Beginning and ending with Walter Huston's award-winning role of the worn-out old miner who is looking for one last big score, Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt are equal to the task and draw us into this tale of need and greed. So convincing is Walter's portrayal of the seasoned old prospector, we come to believe that he is a gold digger by trade who only acts in movies so that he can dig and pan for gold again and again. OSCAR Wins: 3OSCAR Nominations: 4Total Film Awards: 13His knowledge of mining and the lifestyle it demands and forces upon those who partake is so thorough that Bogart and Holt seem like school kids in awe of a new hero. Of course, we know that his son John did much research in preparation for writing the screenplay; but we are nevertheless plunged into a sure belief that this old miner must surely have been there age upon age, mine upon mine, and has, therefore, a thousand tales to tell. Release Date: 24 January 1948Distributor: Warner BrothersBudget: $3MWorldwide Gross: $215KWhen, in the course of the story, Walter is taken away, somewhat without choice, to work the magic of a healer for a Mexican village, we are again convinced that he is a medical doctor hiding out as a prospector. This is the acting craft in full bloom. Walter becomes whatever is called for in the story. Have to shout out to the comical Mexican character-actor Alfonso Bedoya, who steals the moment in all the scenes he appears in, especially when he delivers his classic "Stinking Badges" line. (What person would dress up as a Bandito for a costume party and not want to look exactly like Bedoya's Gold Hat character?) Beautifully shot, Huston also shot this film on location in Mexico, becoming one of the first Hollywood directors in history to shoot in another country. DIRECTOR: John HustonWRITER: John Huston, B. He is one of Hollywood's most underrated actors of all time. Those who have not seen this film have a joyous experience awaiting them. Great story, great screenplay, great acting. This is one of the purest examples of why we as an audience love movies the way we do.LET’S HAVE A DISCUSSION: Did you enjoy this film?
