The Lijadu Sisters

The Lijadu Sisters, twin sisters Yeye Taiwo and Kehinde Lijadu, are iconic Afrobeat musicians who emerged from Nigeria's vibrant 1970s music scene. Born in 1948 in Jos and raised in Ibadan, they were inspired by Yoruba traditions and global sounds, blending Afrobeat, funk, reggae, rock, disco, and soul. Their music reflects Nigeria's cultural renaissance following independence, influenced by their second cousin, Fela Kuti. The sisters' musical journey began with their mother's encouragement, leading them to write songs that resonated with themes of empowerment, societal issues, and personal experiences. They released five imperative albums throughout the 1970s, Urede (1974), Danger (1976), Mother Africa (1977), Sunshine (1978) and Horizon Unlimited (1979). Rooted in Yoruba traditions, the sisters embodied the Ibeji, or sacred twins, in their society. They pushed boundaries in a male-dominated industry, despite obstacles, including Kehinde's debilitating accident in the 1980s. Kehinde passed away in 2019, but Yeye Taiwo continues their legacy. Guided by their mother's advice to "sing about things happening in real time," The Lijadu Sisters' music remains a powerful, timeless testament to their impact on Afrobeat and global music, inspiring new generations worldwide.
