Balázs Demény

I am a Berlin based pianist, who has been born into a musical family in Transylvania. My father was a composer, pianist, and opera director, and my grandmother was a passionate music theoretician and folk music collector. My grandmother even worked closely with Kodály to create a scientific catalog of the folk music of the Aranyosszék region, diving deep into the area's unique melodies. This environment was truly inspirational for me throughout my life. I spent my childhood immersed in folk music, constantly listening, dancing, and singing. From the fatherly side I could also explore a lot of contemporary music, which broadened my musical horizons. If I had to define myself musically, I'd say I have a special connection with the works of Bartók. His music resonates with me on a profound level, and I strive to include his compositions in my repertoire as much as I can.
