In times like these, when backlash, culture wars, and patriarchal fantasies of omnipotence are becoming socially acceptable worldwide, it is important to take a stand and show your colors. Or, as American free jazz musician Jamie Branch puts it: “It is not always time to be neutral.” Sir Bradley is a queer-feminist collective from Hamburg, Germany that loves jazz but plays it differently. They describe their music as FinalStraightJazz. Their highly charged and subtle sound is a wild mix of modern jazz, free jazz, avant-garde and indie pop. Sir Bradley also simply smashes a few stereotypes. Ageism? There is a 40-year age gap between the youngest and oldest band members. No men can play in a feminist band? Absolutely not. The world is binary? Not in this band. Jazz is only something to listen to? Not with this band. Sir Bradley's FinalStraightJazz is highly emotional and highly political. The lyrics of the songs on their new EP Before I Go To Bed (Pussy Empire Rec., 10.10.) warn of climate catastrophe (12 Monkeys), technocrats and despots (Bitter Crop), celebrate immigrants (Baba Sazi) and tell of nights with beer and popcorn (Cool Pop). Everything rises in these highly imaginative compositions: Memories and fantasies, intoxication and melancholy, lost loves and unleashed rage. Sir Bradley lets all these states and moods vibrate. Pulsating and demanding, with friction and drive. Sir Bradley is a real band. Something that is no longer so common in jazz.
