THE Astrolabe

THE Astrolabe is the sonic dreamscape of Athens-based musician Thanos Yamas. It’s a project born from his lifelong passion to share the melodies that have lived in his mind and heart for years. Blending storytelling, vivid imagery and deep emotion, THE Astrolabe invites listeners to explore a universe of music that’s both personal and expansive. “My relationship with music has a lot of unspoken dimensions,” says Thanos. “Dimensions that I struggle to explain with words. The music of THE Astrolabe comes to me. It’s there when I wake up in the morning with a song in my head. It comes to me at all hours of the day, everywhere that I am. It comes from the very deepest part of me.” Inspired by the likes of Leonard Cohen, Stromae, and Serge Gainsbourg, The Astrolabe merges timeless influences with a modern, ethereal sound, taking listeners on a journey with every track. Leaning into his computer engineering background, Thanos began finding the confidence and tools to express himself through the GarageBand app, which helped join the dots between the full symphonies he would hear in his head and his lack of traditional musical education. Describing a creative process that sees Thanos work exhaustively on dozens of tracks at any one time, he explains: “It starts with pictures. I'm seeing the story, and I feel like I'm adding the musical soundtrack to that story. It doesn't simply start with music – it's a multimedia inspiration.”
