VPC Ensemble, the New York-based collective led by Dash Lunde (Virtual Perfection Cowboy), makes their debut with Life Is a Strange Loop, an album best described as “psychedelic ambient space jazz.” Born from the existential vertigo of new parenthood and inspired by Douglas Hofstadter’s theories of consciousness, the record serves as a recursive meditation on the universe as one mind imagining itself. Through the integration of “space guitar,” electric viola, flute, oceanic drums, analog synth samples, a dancer in wearable percussion, and wordless vocal textures, the ensemble crafts an immersive, energetic sound journey designed for deep listening. More energetic than the usual ambient record, more calming than psychedelic rock, and improvisational but with a far different sound than traditional jazz, the ensemble presents a sound that feels at the same time familiar and yet completely unlike anything else.
VPC Ensemble plays Los Depressos Recording Studio in New York City on Friday 25 September.
