The second evening of the series “Hot and Free? Jazz in Divided Berlin, 1950–1970” explores the pioneers of GDR jazz and the development of free jazz in the 1960s and 1970s. The event features a combination of discussion and concert, bringing together two generations of musicians who shaped the scene. Friedhelm Schönfeld, a key witness to Berlin's jazz history since the 1950s, joins Heiner Reinhardt and Helmut “Joe” Sachse to discuss the creative freedom found within the GDR and how the construction of the Berlin Wall influenced musical development. The evening includes live performances by Helmut “Joe” Sachse on guitar and percussion, joined by Heiner Reinhardt on bass clarinet and Joe Hertenstein on drums.
