A nostalgic, underground acoustic folk night.
Mamady Kouyate is one of Guinea's better known guitarists and the heir to a long line of griots. Taught by his father, who was among the first to introduce guitar into the tradition, Kouyate made his mark as an electric guitarist in the 1970s. After performing with the legendary Bembeya Jazz, he relocated to the US in the early 2000s and founded the Mandingo Ambassadors. The group serves as a vehicle for his original music, channeling the classic 1970s sound of Guinea's Sylliphone recordings. Performing every Wednesday at Barbès, the ensemble delivers dazzling vocal and guitar patterns supported by a rhythmic section that the New York Times described as a perfect system.
