Met The Phantom of the Opera (1925) keert een mijlpaal uit de filmgeschiedenis terug naar het grote doek. Alexandre Tharaud improviseert live de pianobegeleiding bij Rupert Julians verfilming van Gaston Leroux’ roman. Acteur Lon Chaney vertolkte de Phantom op iconische wijze en maakte met zijn grensverleggende make‑up de film tot een sensatie. Voor Tharaud is film geen bijzaak; in zijn jonge jaren verdiende hij zijn sporen als bioscooppianist, improviserend bij stille films.
