A nostalgic, underground baroque night.
William Christie and Les Arts Florissants lead the audience in a discovery of Luigi Rossi's Oratorio per la Settimana Santa, one of the earliest Italian oratorios. Likely the oldest surviving oratorio dedicated to the Passion, the work was among the first recorded by Les Arts Florissants in the 1980s. Organized in two parts, the piece describes the condemnation of Jesus by Pontius Pilate and the lamentation of the Virgin Mary, incorporating mythological elements alongside scenes of both interior sorrow and dramatic violence.
