Arabesque-Events in Amsterdam

Arabesque is a Turkish musical genre that emerged in the late 1960s, blending traditional Turkish folk and classical elements with Middle Eastern orchestration and vocal styles. Characterized by its melancholic and fatalistic themes, the genre typically features weeping violin sections, the bağlama, and the kanun, creating a highly emotional atmosphere focused on longing and suffering. The rhythmic foundation often utilizes slow to mid-tempo patterns derived from regional folk traditions, distinguishing it from contemporary Western pop while heavily influencing the development of modern Turkish popular music. Semantically, it occupies a space between rural Anatolian heritage and urban sentimentality, representing a distinct synthesis of Eastern melodic modes and lush, orchestral arrangements.
