Baroque Singing-Events in Amsterdam

Baroque singing encompasses the vocal traditions of the Western art music period from approximately 1600 to 1750, emerging as a departure from Renaissance polyphony toward expressive monody. Typically accompanied by a basso continuo consisting of harpsichord or lute, the genre highlights the virtuosity of the performer through complex ornamentation and trills. Its rhythmic structure adheres to the doctrine of the affections, where specific musical motifs represent distinct human emotions, ranging from profound sorrow to ecstatic joy. As the predecessor to Classical vocal styles, it laid the foundation for modern opera and oratorio by emphasizing a clear melodic line over intricate harmonic counterpoint, creating a dramatic and theatrical listening experience.
