Emerging from late 19th-century French cabaret and music hall traditions, chanson is a lyric-driven genre that prioritizes the narrative and emotional delivery of the vocalist. It typically features acoustic instrumentation such as the accordion, piano, and classical guitar, often supported by orchestral strings to enhance its theatrical storytelling. The rhythm is frequently flexible, employing rubato or steady waltz-like patterns that vary from somber, slow-paced ballads to spirited mid-tempo arrangements. Characterized by its poetic depth and nostalgic mood, the genre serves as a bridge between traditional French folk music and contemporary popular song, emphasizing the chanteur as a distinct artistic figure within European musical heritage.
