Gamelan-Events in Amsterdam

Gamelan is the traditional ensemble music of Indonesia, originating primarily from the islands of Java and Bali and encompassing a rich variety of percussion-led styles. Characterized by a diverse array of instruments including bronze metallophones, xylophones, kendang drums, and tuned gongs, the genre is defined by complex cyclic structures and interlocking rhythmic patterns known as kotekan. While rooted in ancient courtly and religious traditions, gamelan has profoundly influenced global genres like Western minimalism and contemporary percussion music through its shimmering, hypnotic sonic textures. Its mood typically ranges from the stately and meditative atmospheres of Javanese styles to the dynamic, high-energy flourishes characteristic of Balinese performance traditions.
