Kaseko-Events in Amsterdam

Kaseko is a vibrant Surinamese dance music genre that emerged in the mid-20th century, evolving from traditional styles like Bigi Poku and Kawina while incorporating Western jazz and pop influences. The instrumentation typically features a driving rhythm section anchored by the skratji drum, complemented by electric guitars, bass, and a powerful, melodic brass section consisting of saxophones and trumpets. Characterized by its high energy and complex 4/4 polyrhythms, the genre maintains a celebratory and infectious mood designed for social dancing and communal festivities. As a cornerstone of Surinamese identity, it shares rhythmic DNA with Caribbean calypso and zouk while remaining a distinct cultural expression of the Afro-Surinamese population.
