Moroccan Chaabi-Events in Amsterdam

Moroccan Chaabi is a vibrant folk-pop genre that emerged in the early 20th century within the urban centers of Morocco, evolving from traditional Malhun and rural folk influences. Typically characterized by its driving 6/8 or 12/8 polyrhythms, the music centers on the rhythmic interplay between the bendir, darbouka, and the kamanja, which is often played vertically on the knee. The genre is renowned for its festive and communal mood, frequently accelerating in tempo during the rkiz section to induce trance-like dancing at weddings and social celebrations. While it maintains deep roots in acoustic traditions, modern variations incorporate synthesizers and electric guitars, bridging the gap between ancestral Moroccan sounds and contemporary popular music.
