Musica Antigua-Events in Amsterdam

Musica antigua, or early music, encompasses European classical traditions from the fall of the Roman Empire through the Baroque era, concluding around the mid-18th century. Utilizing period-accurate instrumentation like lutes, viols, and harpsichords, the genre emphasizes historically informed performance practices that distinguish it from modern orchestral interpretations. The rhythmic structures are highly diverse, ranging from the fluid monophony of Gregorian chant to the complex polyphonic textures of the Renaissance and the structured ornamentation of the Baroque. While its mood can oscillate between ethereal devotion and vibrant courtly celebration, it fundamentally serves as the foundational ancestor to the Common Practice Period of Western music.
